中國向來以「禮儀之邦」自居，聖人亦以「禮教」作為治平天下之重要手段。縱使中古的公私禮書都已漸趨成熟，但其行用效力卻僅止於政治權力的擁有者，始終無法真正普及庶人。安史亂後國家社會的巨大變動，讓公私禮儀文本出現重大變化：國家禮典因皇權的深入，使其教化功能漸失聖人禮教之原意；私禮文本則在科舉士人提升家族教養之考量下，而競相投入編撰，其中尤以朱熹《家禮》為代表，元、明即將之納入國家禮教規範。透過禮典與家禮之行用，「禮下庶人」的理想在形式上已經達成。此歷史發展的推動力量，正是儒士與君主之治國理想──「制禮以教天下」。本書即在勾勒公私禮書在唐、宋發展的樣貌，及其轉變之歷史脈絡與意義。
